Brennan Manning, in his book The Ragggamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burned Out writes, “We should be astonished at the goodness of God, stunned that He should bother to call us by name, our mouths wide open at His love, bewildered that at this very moment we are standing on holy ground.”
Last night . . . I witnessed something amazing for only the second time in my life!! I stood astonished at the goodness of a good, good Father! I stood with my mouth wide open that I should have the opportunity to walk upon such holy ground. The call of the Spirit rang forth in those hollowed halls, and the people could do nothing but . . . walk upon holy ground!
Only three baptisms were scheduled . . . but God’s finger began to stir the hearts of people. We were up to ten people now . . . but God’s finger continued to stir hearts, and the people continued to walk upon holy ground! At fifteen baptized, we thought, “What a night!” YET, God’s finger continued to stir the hearts of the people . . . and we all continued to walk upon holy ground! At twenty, no one moved . . . until from the back a voice yells, “Wait a minute!” The voice echoed the evidence of God’s finger continuing to stir hearts. After twenty-five people were baptized, many for the first time and others to represent their rededication, this old preacher boy’s cup overflowed!
One memorable quote that I will take to my grave was from Mr. King who said, “I want what my wife has!” What a display of courage Mr. King! What a testimony to your life before your family Mrs. King! It is one of the sweetest moments I have ever witnessed!
I witnessed families being baptized together. I watched as parents baptized their children. I watched as children helped baptize their parents. I got to hear people ask Jesus into their hearts. I got to hear people rededicate their lives saying, “From this day forward, I shall follow Jesus!”
As I sit here this morning . . . tears continue to flow, I can’t stop them. For only the second time in my life, I have witnessed . . . the finger of God stir the hearts and minds of a people . . . and they responded!! I have only witnessed this outpouring of the Spirit on one other occasion as a student at West View Baptist Church. At that time, I witnessed well over 30 people come to be baptized! I am blessed to have seen such events, and long to see more than this!
I am honored to be one of your ministers folks! I am honored to walk beside you . . . on such a holy ground as we stood upon last night! Yet, I am reminded that as good as last night was, I believe better things than these shall occur if we allow the finger of God to continue stirring our hearts and minds for His Glory! I love you all so very much, and am PROUD OF YOU ALL!!! Let’s just give God all the glory for what He is doing folks!
Here is a song that I just love. It reminds me of what happened last night . . . people coming to the altar!!
